Within #15

Doug è un fotografo con la F maiuscola. Ci collaboro da anni, per conto della mia azienda - fu lui ad aprirmi il mondo dello still-life, per me sconosciuto fino a quel momento.
Quest'estate a New York, dove risiede, parlammo della mia fotografia, dei differenti approcci ad essa e di come questi riflettano la personalità di ognuno. Da quello che mi disse di sè, pensai subito che un ritratto per il mio progetto sarebbe stata un'esperienza interessante per entrambi, ma glielo proposi solo qualche mese dopo, qui a Roma: accettò, lusingato e incuriosito dal mio tentativo di sganciarlo dalle sue strutture razionali.
Doug non è mai stato abituato a che gli si prestasse completa attenzione: cresciuto con un fratello gemello, per lui il concetto di individuo a sè stante ha preso corpo solo con il progressivo allontanamento da quell'assetto famigliare. Nel tempo ha sviluppato una personalità fortemente ancorata allo scegliere con la testa, piuttosto che con la pancia. Questo è il motivo per cui l'ho ritratto: fare sì che si concedesse una corsa fuori dal recinto, giusto per sentire che aria tirasse.
Non ho scattato molto e parlato un po' di più del solito: era come se le fotografie in realtà fossero solo appunti che si collocavano negli spazi di mezzo, a completare i dialoghi nel silenzio dello sguardo.
Quando la persona ritratta non solo è lì ma vuole anche esserci, la foto arriva quasi subito.

Doug is a photographer with a capital P. We have been collaborating for years on projects for my company - he was the one who opened my eyes on the world of still-life photography, unknown to me until then.

This summer in New York, where he lives, we talked of my photography, different approaches to it and how they reflect each one's personality. From what he told me of himself, I thought that a portrait for my project would be an interesting experience for both of us, but I suggested it to him only a few months later, here in Rome. He accepted, flattered and intrigued by my attempt to let him disengage from rational structures.
Doug has never been accustomed to being paid full attention to: grown up with a twin brother, for him the concept of the individual in its own right has taken shape only with the gradual detachment from that familiar arrangement. Over time he developed a personality strongly anchored to choosing with the brain, rather than with the guts. This is the reason why I portrayed him: I wanted him to take a ride out of the fence and breathe that kind of air.
I haven't shot a lot and talked a little more than I usually do: it was as if the photographs were actually only notes filling the spaces inbetween, completing dialogues in the silence of the gaze.
When the person portrayed is not only there but also wants to be there, the photo comes almost immediately.
