Within #5

(english translation below)

Within numero cinque, dunque.

July 2010, TPW workshop with Settimio. Among the "seven deadly dudes" of the class there is also Mario Zanaria, aka Zamario.
As I opened his portfolio I immediately realized I was looking at something I liked - a lot, indeed. There were several of those pictures that I consider worth of this name, meeting a personal criteria: after having seen them, I can not live without them, as they set themselves somewhere inside and remain there for some reason, maybe sliding on mobile plans according to where my visual maturation translates over time.
I had never thought to pose for him, it's an idea not older than a week and, like all the best intuitions, it was immediately accomplished. Funnily, when I accepted to pose I also asked him to participate in turn to my portrait project. Face number five, then. But let's step back. Posing for Mario has been an experience of thrilling serenity: fun, playful, but at the same time a full and deep breath. A fabric made of sincere familiarity, stitched with many revealing moments and ending every now and then into more resolute buttonholes.
After his photo session to me, I began mine to him. What I experienced this time is the feeling of being both behind and in front of the lens: having been just portrayed by him, I felt like the demarcation between subject and object was sort of diluted. The nature of my project, however, is about creating a contact, which in this case had a different guise from the past. Even when I had shot Sinapsi - the second subject of my project - it had been a reciprocal photo session, but the approach was very different - and it shows in the photo I chose then. Those of Mario have yet to be developed, but also in this case I think I already know which one I will select.
Meanwhile, this is the last shot of the day and I particularly like it because it tells the joy I rediscovered on that occasion by shooting without thoughts. It's been a while since I haven't seen myself like that.

Finally, a fresh recommendation: Mario's exhibition, which opens Sept. 16 at the Bluorg Gallery in Bari, and that can be visited until Oct. 16.
